Does Humana Cover Medical Alerts?

Last Updated On: Dec 10, 2025

Humana today does NOT cover any brand of medical alert systems. Humana used to cover the Lifeline brand as part of its Medicare Advantage plan, but discontinued this in 2024. Lifeline, formerly known as Phillips Lifeline, is a reputable medical alert provider with a solid history – see our Lifeline Company Review page for more detail.

Humana is a health insurance provider popular with almost six million users, and especially known for its Medicare Advantage policies – Forbes rated it as having the Best Nationwide Coverage for these policies in 2025. The company is said to be planning to decrease its Medicare Advantage coverage in 2026.

Original Medicare has never seen the medical alert system as an insurable item – neither Part A nor Part B cover medical alert systems because they are not considered medically necessary durable medical equipment (DME). Medicare Advantage, on the other hand, has been known to cover some systems through some providers.

United Healthcare (UHC) has partnered with Lifeline to cover that brand of medical alert system through a Medicare Advantage plan – see more detail here.

Beyond this one option, the search may be for the needle in the haystack. There are more than 1,000 insurance companies providing healthcare insurance in America, with perhaps as many as two dozen of the most well known and popular. You should check your current insurance plan and your provider’s options. While Humana Medicare Advantage plans don’t help pay for a home emergency response system, some other carriers may offer plans in your area that include this type of benefit.

Money Savers

There are other ways to save on costs, beyond your health insurance plan, many of them common sense and practical.

Many older adults utilize medical alert systems, and at Medical Alert Buyer’s Guide, we’ve extensively reviewed many of the leading brands. Most of our screening involves pricing, especially with an eye to hidden costs, and alternately the possibility of discounts, on these potentially life-saving devices and systems.

Many venues offer discounts to AARP members, and some medical alert systems do too. See our guide to Medical Alert System Discounts for AARP Members for more information. Various other discounts and reimbursements may be available through government programs – see our guide to Medical Alert System Discounts: Medicare/Medicaid and Group Discounts for details.

Also be sure to see our cautionary article on Best No Fee Medical Alert Systems for Seniors, which explains why these may not be the value they seem. Bundling may offer value, when you combine a manufacturer’s home-based system with its mobile system, and when you want to share the service or equipment with another person in the house. These options are all covered in our reviews here at Medical Alert Buyer’s Guide.
