Lifeline is one of the oldest medical alert system providers in the industry. The company began as Lifeline Systems and was founded by Dr. Andrew Dibner, a gerontologist who developed the first medical alert system and began selling them in the late 1970s. Lifeline was later acquired by Philips and became a global healthcare company and in 2021 Connect America acquired Lifeline, with Philips maintaining an equity stake in the company.

Equipment

The medical alert systems offered by Lifeline are versatile for at-home use with the HomeSafe systems, or mobile use with the GoSafe systems. Each category of products offers two options.

In-Home Systems

The HomeSafe Standard option is a basic home alert system with no frills, while the HomeSafe with AutoAlert includes a pendant with optional fall detection. Both in-home options can be used with or without a landline phone, and offer two-way communication with response center operators.

Mobile Systems

The first mobile option, GoSafe, includes automatic fall detection and GPS location tracking through AT&T wireless network – the only carrier network available with Lifeline. The system is suitable for both in-home and mobile use because it has a central station that is compatible with a landline connection. The second mobile option, GoSafe 2, is entirely mobile and does not have a home base for landline connection.

Monitoring

Lifeline response centers are located throughout the U.S. and Canada. Operators are available 24/7, and are multilingual, serving customers in more than 200 languages. In addition, the company states its average response time is 12 seconds. Rapid response time is critical, since research shows that the amount of time it takes to get help in a medical emergency can significantly affect your recovery. Unlike some of its competitors, however, Lifeline’s emergency response centers do not have the TMA (CSAA) Five Diamond certification.

When a user activates the emergency button on a medical alert device, or a fall is automatically detected, an emergency notification is sent to the response center. Operators then attempt contact with the user to determine the level of emergency response needed. If contact is not successful, emergency responders are dispatched to the location, and the user’s emergency contacts are also notified.

Pricing

Lifeline is one of the more expensive medical alert system providers. That said, research suggests that every dollar spent on a medical alert system results in more than $7 in healthcare savings and reduces hospital use by 59%! The monthly costs are relatively higher than alternatives, and they also charge startup fees. New customers will face between $50 and $149 in startup costs due to activation fees* and device fees that vary depending on the product chosen. Monthly prices range between $29.95 for an in-home system and $54.95 for a mobile GPS system. There are no prepay discounts available to lower the monthly cost, but there are also no contracts.
